Writer’s Block is a 1,200 sf Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) that formalizes the social space of the main house as it is situated along the side yard between an existing outdoor patio space and a pool. Designed around client-specific work and play desires the building functions as a 9-seat state-of-the-art theatre with an adjacent projection room as well as two outdoor rooms to accommodate gardening and dining. The upper level features a workspace for a screenwriter and an interior dining and living area. Starting with a black box theatre typology the project reveals interior domestic moments that allow natural light into the upper-level writing loft as well as exterior alcoves that offer views out to the social scenarios unfolding below.
